Tip

Make three days' worth; it thickens in the fridge, so loosen it with water when reheating.

Why oat soup is perfect for Ramadan

After hours of fasting, the stomach wants something light and warm. Oat soup brings fluids and salts, and oats contain beta-glucan fibre that supports fullness and gentler digestion — a good lead-in to the main dish.

Add-ins to vary the flavour

  • Fresh coriander instead of parsley
  • A spoon of yogurt on top
  • A little orzo instead of half the oats
  • A squeeze of lemon just before eating

Prep ahead for the whole month

Make a big batch of chicken broth and freeze it in portions. Each day add oats and veg 10 minutes before iftar — a big time-saver in the last hour.

About 160 kcal for roughly 1.5 cups, depending on the chicken.

Can I make it vegetarian?

Yes — use vegetable stock and add chickpeas or lentils for protein.

How long does it keep?

3 days in the fridge or a month frozen. Loosen with water when reheating.
