Luqaimat are the queen of Gulf Ramadan desserts, but deep-frying makes them heavy. In the air fryer they come out golden and crisp with just a spoon of oil, and we swap sugar syrup for date syrup.
A Ramadan treat you can enjoy without feeling heavy after taraweeh.
What's different
- A spoon of oil instead of a deep fryer
- Date syrup instead of sugar syrup
- A sensible portion: 5–6 pieces
Air Fryer Luqaimat
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- 1/4 cup cornflour
- 1 tsp instant yeast
- 1 tsp sugar
- Cardamom and saffron
- About 1 cup warm water
- 1 tbsp oil (spray)
- Date syrup and sesame to serve
Method
- Mix the dry ingredients, add warm water to a soft sticky batter, and rest 1 hour to rise.
- Spray the air fryer basket with oil and drop small balls using two spoons or wet hands.
- Spray the balls and cook 12 minutes at 190°C, turning halfway.
- Drizzle with date syrup and sesame; serve hot.
Tip
Don't crowd the basket — cook in two batches so they brown all over.
How many calories do you save?
A deep-fried luqaimat ball in sugar syrup can reach 70–90 kcal; the air-fried one with date syrup is about 40. Five pieces save roughly 150–200 kcal.
The secret to air-fryer crunch
- The batter must be sticky and well risen
- Preheat the air fryer 3 minutes
- Spray oil on the balls, not just the basket
- Don't crowd the basket — leave gaps
Topping alternatives
- Date syrup (best)
- Light honey with cinnamon
- Peanut butter thinned with hot water
- Toasted sesame or coconut
Frequently asked questions
Why are my luqaimat dry?
Usually the batter is too stiff or under-risen. Add a little more warm water and rest a full hour somewhere warm.
Can I bake them in the oven?
Yes, on an oiled tray at 200°C for about 15 minutes — less crunchy than the air fryer.
Are healthy luqaimat OK on a diet?
In moderation, yes — stick to 4–5 pieces after taraweeh.
Can I use wholewheat flour?
Mix half wholewheat with half white; the result will be a bit denser.
